Samsung Electronics revealed its new top-of-the-line smartphone on Thursday, the Galaxy S4. Here's how it compares to the competition and its predecessor, the S III.

Samsung Galaxy S4:

Display: 5-inch diagonal, 1920 by 1080 pixels organic light-emitting diode screen

Weight: 4.6 ounces (130g)

Cameras: 13-megapixel on back, 2-megapixel on front.

Storage: 16, 32 or 64 gigabytes of built-in flash memory, plus a MicroSD slot for expansion.

Software: Android 4.2.2 "Jelly Bean."

Price: Not announced yet, but expect $200 with a two-year contract for 16-gigabyte version.

Availability: Launch starts at end of April.

Notable features: Senses fingers "hovering" over screen. Additional infra-red sensor watches for hand gestures up to 4 inches away. Thanks to infra-red diode, can act as universal remote for entertainment centre. Cameras can be used at same time, adding user's face to group shots.

Samsung Galaxy S III:

Display: 4.8-inch diagonal, 1280 by 720 pixels organic light-emitting diode screen

Weight: 4.7 ounces (133g)

Cameras: 8-megapixel on back, 2-megapixel on front.

Storage: 16, 32 or 64 gigabytes of built-in flash memory, plus a MicroSD slot for expansion.

Software: Android 4.0.4 "Ice Cream Sandwich or 4.1 "Jelly Bean."

Price: From free to $200 with a two-year contract and 16 gigabytes of memory, depending on carrier.

Availability: On sale since May.

Notable features: Big, sharp and colourful screen for its time, now surpassed.

Apple iPhone 5:

Display: 4-inch diagonal, 1136 by 640 pixels liquid-crystal display

Weight: 4 ounces (112g)

Cameras: 8-megapixel on back, 1.2-megapixel on front.

Storage: 16, 32 or 64 gigabytes of built-in flash memory.

Software: iOS 6

Price: $200 with a two-year contract, depending on carrier.

Availability: On sale since September.

Notable features: Precision-machined metal-and-glass body.

HTC One:

Display: 4.7-inch diagonal, 1920 by 1080 pixels liquid-crystal display

Weight: 5 ounces (143g)

Cameras: 4-megapixel on back, 2.1-megapixel on front.

Storage: 32 or 64 gigabytes of built-in flash memory.

Software: Android 4.1.2 "Jelly Bean."

Price: Not announced yet.

Availability: On sale in the next few months.

Notable features: Precision-machined aluminum body. Back-side camera has sacrificed resolution for better ability to take pictures in low light. Thanks to infra-red diode, can act as universal remote for entertainment centre.

comparison between Android versions

Android platform

Android is a software stack that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications. While Google is the main actor which comes to mind, the Open Handset Alliance also collaborates on Android's development and release. The operating system is based on the Linux kernel, the specific versions depends on the platform version and is given in the comparison table below.

Phones / Tablets

There was previously two flavors of the platform. One targeted for small screens mainly mobile phones (all versions below 3.0), and one dedicated for tablets: Honeycomb Android 3.0. However not all Android tablets support this version (some tablets use the Android 2.x).

These two variants of the platform have been merged to a versatile and uniform platform since "Ice Cream Sandwich", which has been released in October 2011. It combines "Gingerbread" and "Honeycomb" versions in a cohesive platform for tablets and phones at the same time.

The latest version of the platform is now Jelly Bean Android 4.2.2. It focuses on speed and graphics smoothness while enabling new applications like Google Beam, Google Now and a better camera app.
